333388fd3c Move let expression checking to parsing
There was an incomplete version of the check in parsing and a second
version in AST validation. This meant that some, but not all, invalid
uses were allowed inside macros/disabled cfgs. It also means that later
passes have a hard time knowing when the let expression is in a valid
location, sometimes causing ICEs.

- Add a field to ExprKind::Let in AST/HIR to mark whether it's in a
  valid location.
- Suppress later errors and MIR construction for invalid let
  expressions.

75d5f107dd Bugfix: 'can_have_side_effects()' would return 'false' for struct/enum/array/tuple literals unless *all* sub-expressions had side effects. This would easily allow side effects to slip through, and also wrongly label empty literals as having side effects. Add some tests for the last point 2023-08-10 02:26:11 +02:00

5706be1854 Improve spans for indexing expressions
Indexing is similar to method calls in having an arbitrary
left-hand-side and then something on the right, which is the main part
of the expression. Method calls already have a span for that right part,
but indexing does not. This means that long method chains that use
indexing have really bad spans, especially when the indexing panics and
that span in coverted into a panic location.

This does the same thing as method calls for the AST and HIR, storing an
extra span which is then put into the `fn_span` field in THIR.

`hir`: Add `Become` expression kind (explicit tail calls experiment)

This adds `hir::ExprKind::Become` alongside ast lowering. During hir-thir lowering we currently lower `become` as `return`, so that we can partially test `become` without ICEing.

23e91d4d73 Remove some unnecessary derives.
I was curious about how many `Encodable`/`Decodable` derives we have.
Some grepping revealed that it's over 500 of each, but the number of
`Encodable` ones was higher, which was weird. Most of the
`Encodable`-only ones were in `hir.rs`. This commit removes them all,
plus some other unnecessary derives in that file and others that I found
via trial and error.

34ed5c3efc Alloc hir::Lit in an arena to remove the destructor from Expr
This allows allocating `Expr`s into a dropless arena, which is useful
for using length prefixed thing slices in HIR, since these can only be
allocated in the dropless arena and not in a typed arena. This is
something I'm working on.

9570023ce1 Only compute the crate hash when necessary.
The crate hash is needed:
- if debug assertions are enabled, or
- if incr. comp. is enabled, or
- if metadata is being generated, or
- if `-C instrumentation-coverage` is enabled.

This commit avoids computing the crate hash when these conditions are
all false, such as when doing a release build of a binary crate.

It uses `Option` to store the hashes when needed, rather than
computing them on demand, because some of them are needed in multiple
places and computing them on demand would make compilation slower.

The commit also removes `Owner::hash_without_bodies`. There is no
benefit to pre-computing that one, it can just be done in the normal
fashion.

Remove old FIXMEs referring to #19596

Having an inner function that accepts a mutable reference seems to be the only way this can be expressed. Taking a mutable reference would call the same function with a new type &mut F which then causes the infinite recursion error in #19596.

3e97763872 Auto merge of #106745 - m-ou-se:format-args-ast, r=oli-obk
Move format_args!() into AST (and expand it during AST lowering)

Implements https://github.com/rust-lang/compiler-team/issues/541

This moves FormatArgs from rustc_builtin_macros to rustc_ast_lowering. For now, the end result is the same. But this allows for future changes to do smarter things with format_args!(). It also allows Clippy to directly access the ast::FormatArgs, making things a lot easier.

This change turns the format args types into lang items. The builtin macro used to refer to them by their path. After this change, the path is no longer relevant, making it easier to make changes in `core`.

This updates clippy to use the new language items, but this doesn't yet make clippy use the ast::FormatArgs structure that's now available. That should be done after this is merged.
