Overhaul `TyS` and `Ty`.
Specifically, change `Ty` from this:
```
pub type Ty<'tcx> = &'tcx TyS<'tcx>;
```
to this
```
pub struct Ty<'tcx>(Interned<'tcx, TyS<'tcx>>);
```
There are two benefits to this.
- It's now a first class type, so we can define methods on it. This
means we can move a lot of methods away from `TyS`, leaving `TyS` as a
barely-used type, which is appropriate given that it's not meant to
be used directly.
- The uniqueness requirement is now explicit, via the `Interned` type.
E.g. the pointer-based `Eq` and `Hash` comes from `Interned`, rather
than via `TyS`, which wasn't obvious at all.
Much of this commit is boring churn. The interesting changes are in
these files:
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/arena.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/mir/visit.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/context.rs
- compiler/rustc_middle/src/ty/mod.rs
Specifically:

- It's now a first class type, so we can define methods on it. This
means we can move a lot of methods away from `TyS`, leaving `TyS` as a
barely-used type, which is appropriate given that it's not meant to
be used directly.
- The uniqueness requirement is now explicit, via the `Interned` type.
E.g. the pointer-based `Eq` and `Hash` comes from `Interned`, rather
than via `TyS`, which wasn't obvious at all.
Much of this commit is boring churn. The interesting changes are in

// obvious. Let me walk you (and myself) through an example.
//
// Let's start with an easy case. Consider two traits:
//
2018-11-05 02:02:43 +00:00
// trait Foo<'a>: Bar<'a,'a> { }
2015-02-24 09:24:42 -05:00
// trait Bar<'b,'c> { }
//
2018-11-05 02:02:43 +00:00
// Now, if we have a trait reference `for<'x> T: Foo<'x>`, then
// we can deduce that `for<'x> T: Bar<'x,'x>`. Basically, if we
2015-02-24 09:24:42 -05:00
// knew that `Foo<'x>` (for any 'x) then we also know that
// `Bar<'x,'x>` (for any 'x). This more-or-less falls out from
// normal substitution.
//
// In terms of why this is sound, the idea is that whenever there
// is an impl of `T:Foo<'a>`, it must show that `T:Bar<'a,'a>`
// holds. So if there is an impl of `T:Foo<'a>` that applies to
// all `'a`, then we must know that `T:Bar<'a,'a>` holds for all
// `'a`.
//
// Another example to be careful of is this:
//
2018-11-05 02:02:43 +00:00
// trait Foo1<'a>: for<'b> Bar1<'a,'b> { }
2015-02-24 09:24:42 -05:00
// trait Bar1<'b,'c> { }
//
2018-11-05 02:02:43 +00:00
// Here, if we have `for<'x> T: Foo1<'x>`, then what do we know?
// The answer is that we know `for<'x,'b> T: Bar1<'x,'b>`. The
2015-02-24 09:24:42 -05:00
// reason is similar to the previous example: any impl of
2018-11-05 02:02:43 +00:00
// `T:Foo1<'x>` must show that `for<'b> T: Bar1<'x, 'b>`. So
2015-02-24 09:24:42 -05:00
// basically we would want to collapse the bound lifetimes from
// the input (`trait_ref`) and the supertraits.
//
// To achieve this in practice is fairly straightforward. Let's
// consider the more complicated scenario:
//
2018-11-05 02:02:43 +00:00
// - We start out with `for<'x> T: Foo1<'x>`. In this case, `'x`
// has a De Bruijn index of 1. We want to produce `for<'x,'b> T: Bar1<'x,'b>`,
2015-02-24 09:24:42 -05:00
// where both `'x` and `'b` would have a DB index of 1.
// The substitution from the input trait-ref is therefore going to be
// `'a => 'x` (where `'x` has a DB index of 1).
2021-10-02 07:21:01 +07:00
// - The supertrait-ref is `for<'b> Bar1<'a,'b>`, where `'a` is an
2015-02-24 09:24:42 -05:00
// early-bound parameter and `'b' is a late-bound parameter with a
// DB index of 1.
// - If we replace `'a` with `'x` from the input, it too will have
// a DB index of 1, and thus we'll have `for<'x,'b> Bar1<'x,'b>`
// just as we wanted.
//
// There is only one catch. If we just apply the substitution `'a
// => 'x` to `for<'b> Bar1<'a,'b>`, the substitution code will
// adjust the DB index because we substituting into a binder (it
// tries to be so smart...) resulting in `for<'x> for<'b>
// Bar1<'x,'b>` (we have no syntax for this, so use your
// imagination). Basically the 'x will have DB index of 2 and 'b
// will have DB index of 1. Not quite what we want. So we apply
// the substitution to the *contents* of the trait reference,
// rather than the trait reference itself (put another way, the
// substitution code expects equal binding levels in the values
// from the substitution and the value being substituted into, and
// this trick achieves that).
2020-10-26 14:18:31 -04:00
// Working through the second example:
// trait_ref: for<'x> T: Foo1<'^0.0>; substs: [T, '^0.0]
// predicate: for<'b> Self: Bar1<'a, '^0.0>; substs: [Self, 'a, '^0.0]
// We want to end up with:
// for<'x, 'b> T: Bar1<'^0.0, '^0.1>
// To do this:
// 1) We must shift all bound vars in predicate by the length
// of trait ref's bound vars. So, we would end up with predicate like
// Self: Bar1<'a, '^0.1>

Cleanup substitutions and treatment of generics around traits in a number of ways.
- In a TraitRef, use the self type consistently to refer to the Self type:
- trait ref in `impl Trait<A,B,C> for S` has a self type of `S`.
- trait ref in `A:Trait` has the self type `A`
- trait ref associated with a trait decl has self type `Self`
- trait ref associated with a supertype has self type `Self`
- trait ref in an object type `@Trait` has no self type
- Rewrite `each_bound_traits_and_supertraits` to perform
substitutions as it goes, and thus yield a series of trait refs
that are always in the same 'namespace' as the type parameter
bound given as input. Before, we left this to the caller, but
this doesn't work because the caller lacks adequare information
to perform the type substitutions correctly.
- For provided methods, substitute the generics involved in the provided
method correctly.
- Introduce TypeParameterDef, which tracks the bounds declared on a type
parameter and brings them together with the def_id and (in the future)
other information (maybe even the parameter's name!).
- Introduce Subst trait, which helps to cleanup a lot of the
repetitive code involved with doing type substitution.
- Introduce Repr trait, which makes debug printouts far more convenient.
Fixes #4183. Needed for #5656.

Folding revamp.
This commit makes type folding more like the way chalk does it.
Currently, `TypeFoldable` has `fold_with` and `super_fold_with` methods.
- `fold_with` is the standard entry point, and defaults to calling
`super_fold_with`.
- `super_fold_with` does the actual work of traversing a type.
- For a few types of interest (`Ty`, `Region`, etc.) `fold_with` instead
calls into a `TypeFolder`, which can then call back into
`super_fold_with`.
With the new approach, `TypeFoldable` has `fold_with` and
`TypeSuperFoldable` has `super_fold_with`.
- `fold_with` is still the standard entry point, *and* it does the
actual work of traversing a type, for all types except types of
interest.
- `super_fold_with` is only implemented for the types of interest.
Benefits of the new model.
- I find it easier to understand. The distinction between types of
interest and other types is clearer, and `super_fold_with` doesn't
exist for most types.
- With the current model is easy to get confused and implement a
`super_fold_with` method that should be left defaulted. (Some of the
precursor commits fixed such cases.)
- With the current model it's easy to call `super_fold_with` within
`TypeFolder` impls where `fold_with` should be called. The new
approach makes this mistake impossible, and this commit fixes a number
of such cases.
- It's potentially faster, because it avoids the `fold_with` ->
`super_fold_with` call in all cases except types of interest. A lot of
the time the compile would inline those away, but not necessarily
always.
